Second in the current series of AVS 'Yank Videos comes
Renting a Yank, which basically has as its central
theme the topic of renting American cars in America.
Throughout the tape, David Craig rents about half a
dozen vehicles from a variety of different
establishments.
These vehicles are rated by David and viewers are told
where and for how much they can rent them. Some sequences
are a little worrying, such as when we are treated to a
clip of the narrator racing up a busy LA highway in a
Dodge Viper, hair flying and microphone in hand as he talks
to the camera; any minute you swear he's going to wipe
himself out! The cars chosen by David to feature on the
video are an excellent cross section of the types of
vehicle that any British visitor would like to rent and
those that many will end up with. There's a Lincoln Town
Car, a Jeep Grand Cherokee, a Chrysler Neon, a Dodge
Viper, a convertible 1971 Buick Centurion and a Cadillac
ragtop.

Certainly this last segment, dealing with Rent-a-Wreck
and those two old 'beaters' (as American call them) is
one of the highlights of the video, and even includes
a short interview with Dave Schwartz, the original founder
of Rent-a-Wreck back in the sixties.
In case you haven't guessed it. The angle on Rent-a-Wreck
is that it specialises in older cars rather than the
brand new ones you can get from Hertz or Avis; the price
inevitable reflects this difference.
Also covered are the benefits of membership to AAA
(the US equivalent of the AA) and Hertz 'Neverlost' in-car
navigation system.
There's lots of addresses and phone numbers in this
production, enabling you to 'pick up the phone before you
leave the UK and rent a car of your dreams!

The name of the game is, as you have already probably
guessed by the title, renting a vehicle in America.
The AVS team try out various companies from both
limits of extremity and a generous handful in between.
You will see a Dodge viper, Lincoln Town Car, Dodge
Neon and a Jeep Gran Cherokee. And from Rent-a-Wreck,
a company founded in 1959, the team have fun trying out
two very presentable convertibles: a 71 Buick Centurion
and 68 Cadillac. (Rotten job, but I guess someone's got
to do it!). The team takes us through the pro's and cons
of the vehicles, each driven some considerable mileage.
We learn how they handle, the cost - and of course the
all important fun-factor.
The video also contains information on Hertz, plus
interviews, useful addresses, and tips on how to save
money on car rental and accommodation before you embark.

As the title suggests, this particular video deals
with all aspects of American car rental while on
holiday or even buying trips to the USA.

Most holiday packages to the US include car rental,
although the vehicle included in the package is usually
the most basic model or bottom of the range. To upgrade
to a larger or more luxurious mode of transport is no
problem, but can prove expensive. The producers of this
video gave very detailed instructions on money saving
trips when looking at car rental in the USA and there
can be considerable saving on your initial rental fees.
A lot of useful advise is supplied through the video and
every step is explained in useful terms. There are a
varied selection of vehicles rented during the filming,
these range from the basic Dodge Neon through to the
Dodge super car, the 450 h. p. Viper and a brief
description of economy, comfort and handling are given
with each vehicle.
At the other end of the scale, you may wish to cruise
in a "Classic" these cars are available from a company
called "Rent a Wreck" who specialise in the rental of
60's and 70's "Rag Tops" included in the video is an
interview with the founder of this company.
